Early Waffle
Without a doubt this may well be my shortest and most succinct Donald Fagen review, and with that I hope that you will have one of those ah-ha moments, where as the listener, you come to appreciate that this entire work, a work that revolves around a futuristic car called the Kamakiriad, which means Praying Mantis in Japanese, has been created to facilitate not the voyage or the journey, not even getting to the end of the journey, but “being” at the end of the journey, and taking stock of where one [Donald Fagen in this case] is at that singular moment in time.As with everything we do, even taking a step, the art of putting one foot in front of the other and moving through a room, is all done for the purpose of being at a certain place at a certain time for a certain reason … and it’s that reason that matters, nothing more, nothing less. Yet considering what one needs to process and go through in order to do that can be amazing to watch. So what we’re watching, or in this case hearing, is the brilliant jazz infused pop intrigues that lead Mr. Fagen to the space that is one step beyond his final step. What he does there is anyone’s guess, and the fact that he holds us so enraptured in so doing is the process that makes life so beautiful and tragic … if we would but take the time to watch the process.Review by Jenell Kesler
